Rent a car in Kefalonia: your trip starts here
It is easy and convenient to hire a car in Kefalonia: the centre of Argostoli, the island’s capital and main port of access, only 2 km from the airport and the ideal setting-off point after you collect your car. Founded by Venetians in the seventeenth century, the city was almost completely reconstructed in the second half of the last century, following the earthquake that struck the island in 1953.
You can start by visiting the splendid Archaeological Museum to discover the history of Kefalonia through the many findings unearthed during excavations carried out on the island and dating back to the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. A special example would be the famous bronze head from 300 BC. After a moussaka lunch in one of the many restaurants dotted around the centre, take a stroll towards Vallianou square and relax in the shade of trees in the majestic gardens of Napier, created at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the eponymous British governor.
Special mention goes to the monument to the fallen Italians of the Acqui division that commemorates an important moment during the history of WWII which took place in Kefalonia, following the armistice of 1943.
Routes through the island
By using our car hire in Kefalonia you can drive from Argostoli; if you access the Ellinikou Erithrou Stavrou you can get to Katavothres quickly and witness a very special phenomenon: here the sea’s waters weave their way through the rocks, reappearing in the underground lakes of Melissani and Karavomilos. It is a spectacle that truly takes one’s breath away. Then, proceed by foot to Fanari beach and from here you will reach the lighthouse of Saint Theodore; with its Doric columns it is an ideal location to photograph the sunset.
Also departing from Argostoli, you can arrive by car in about 40 minutes to the famous beach of Myrtos, situated in the northern region of Pylaros. Its crystalline sea and dazzling white pebbles give it its rightful place in the top 30 most beautiful beaches in the world.
If, on the other hand, you go south to the capital you can reach Mount Ainos; over 1628 metres above sea level, it is one of the most significant summits in all of Greece, as well as a national park in which to admire the extremely rare black pine of Kefalonia and a rich fauna that consists of diverse species of tortoises and peregrine falcons.
